The following tutorial will teach all Linux users how to install the recently released Fedora 15 (Lovelock) operating system on their personal computers.

Fedora 15, also known as Lovelock, was released on May 24th, 2011, and it brings the highly anticipated GNOME 3 desktop environment with the GNOME Shell interface, a new search tool, Deja Dup, GTK+ 3, RPM 4.9, Mozilla Firefox 4, LibreOffice 3, and much more.

This guide will make things very simple for you, but if you get stuck somewhere in the middle of the installation and you need help, do not hesitate to use our commenting system at the end of the article.

What do I need to get started?

· You will need one of the Fedora 15 Live CD ISO images that corresponds to your hardware architecture (i386 or amd64), and which can be downloaded from here.
· You will need a 700 MB CD, because when the download will finish, you need to burn the ISO image with your favorite CD/DVD burning application (Brasero on Linux, or Nero, CDBurnerXP, Roxio on Windows).
· You must have a minimum of 10 GB free space on your hard drive, for the Fedora 15 installation.

Great, now let's begin. Insert or leave the CD in your CD/DVD-ROM device, and reboot the computer in order to boot from it. Hit the F8 or F12 key (depending on your BIOS) to select the CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device. Boot from the CD.

Fedora 15 will automatically boot in 10 seconds.

When you will be asked what type of devices will your installation involve, choose the "Basic Storage Devices" if you are a regular user and you just want to install Fedora on your regular hard drive. Click the Next button...

When you will be asked which type of installation would you like, you have several options to choose from. For example, you can install Fedora 15 alongside another operating system, such as Ubuntu 11.04 or Windows 7, if you choose the "Use Free Space" option. But if you want to install Fedora 15 and erase all the data on your hard drive, you must choose the first option - "Use All Space".

At this step you can also choose to encrypt your entire hard drive, by checking the "Encrypt system" option.

Whichever you choose, click the Next button to continue...

Review image

You will be warned that all your data on the existing hard drive will be deleted. Click the "Write changes to disk" button when asked...

The hard drive will be formatted and the partitions will be created...

Everything will be done automatically from now on, just sit back and watch how the Live CD packages are copied to your hard drive. The installation process will take about 8-10 minutes (depending on your computer specs and the selected packages).

Review image

When the installation is over, you will get a "Congratulations, the installation is complete" screen. Click the "Reboot" button and your computer will automatically restart...

Review image

Remove the Live CD from your optical drive. Your brand new Fedora 15 operating system will boot for the first time...

Review image

If you've chosen to encrypt your partition, then you'll be prompted for the passphrase...

Review image

The system will continue to boot and in a few seconds you will see the First Boot Configuration Wizard. Click "Forward" on the Welcome screen...

Review image

Click "Forward" on the License screen...

Review image

Create a regular user for the system...

If you can, please submit an article on installing/ configuring latest versions of the following tools like a "newbie" on Fedora 15:

1. Sun Java (JDK)
2. NetBeans IDE
3. LAMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP, PHP My Admin)

I'm currently using above packages on Ubuntu, perhaps move on to Fedora 15 soon.

not work at all...can not boot ..although i choose create a custom layout as i wanna to install fedora in specific partition (made a root "\" & "\boot" & creating swap!!)
but after installation boot failure..i tried to use their online help doc but useless..the only working option is WIPE all my HHD.
i`m trying now to setup it using virtual machine "to avoid data lost". hope thats work without a disaster.
Anyhow,,,i`m still using Ubuntu as it has better installation wizard.

if you have eg. Win7 already installed and you try to install fedora with the above partitions(/,/boot, etc) and you have selected the fedora bootloader to be installed at the /boot partition, then you have to say to the win7 bootloader where your fedora system is. if you install the fedora bootloader at the MBR then you do not need a /boot partition and you should be able to boot from both OSs

hope it helps...

You should better show how to install the Fedora 15 KDE spin. This GNOME 3 is almost as bad as Unity.

Those screenshots don't show Gnome Shell in Ghome 3, it shows the classic Gnome interface because they are using an incapable setup for this article. At least point this out (I sure hope you would know the difference).

I bought the Fedora 15 installation disc from OS Disc. They told me I should not buy the Installation CD since I want to be able to use Open Office Writer on my 64 bit system.

Could I have used the Install CD?

Thank you,

William
